You love working with children, you want to work from home, and the idea of running your own setting appeals to you. Here's exactly what's involved.

  1. Check You're Eligible — You must be 18+, have the right to work in the UK, and pass an enhanced DBS check. Everyone over 16 in your household also needs one.

  3. Prepare Your Home — Risk assessment for every room. Working smoke alarms. Secure garden fencing. Safe sleeping arrangements. Nappy-changing area with handwashing. Written policies for safeguarding, behaviour, health & safety, equal opportunities, complaints.
  4. Apply to Ofsted — Register online: DBS certificate, first aid certificate, health declaration from your GP, registration fee (£35–£103). Processing takes ~12 weeks.
  5. The Registration Visit — Inspector visits for 1–2 hours. Walks through every room. Checks your risk assessment and policies. Asks about EYFS framework and safeguarding. Have everything ready to show them.
  6. Get Registered & Start — Certificate arrives within a week. Advertise on childcare.co.uk and local Facebook groups. Apply for funded childcare places.
  7. Ongoing Requirements — Renew DBS every 3 years. Renew first aid every 3 years. Regular CPD. Update risk assessments at least termly. First Ofsted inspection within 30 months.
